THE NURSING CARE FOR PERIPHERAL VENIPUNCTURE

Objective: to identify scientific evidence about quality indicators for peripheral venipuncture in hospitalized patients. Methodology: This is an integrative literature review, carried out using the BDENF, LILACS, MEDLINE data sources. To guide the study, was following research question was formulated: What nursing care is needed to perform peripheral venipuncture in hospitalized patients? The survey of publications took place from July to September 2022. For the searches, the descriptors “Peripheral Catheterization”, “Patient Safety” and “Nursing” were used. Results: The search resulted in the selection of seven articles, of this 45.8% in the year 2019. As for the evaluation of the level of evidence, all were classified as level IV. It was evidenced by the main actions, the choice of material and personal protective equipment, hand hygiene, the selection of the size of the catheter and length of the cannula, the choice of the anatomical site to be punctured, preferably in the upper limbs and skin antisepsis immediately before puncture. Moreover, fix the catheter and cover it with transparent and sterile material, perform the correct identification and easy visualization, promote the exchange of the cover/fixation when there are changes, and perform flushing before and after the administration of medications. Conclusion: venipuncture is a necessary and routine procedure in daily hospital services, so it is important to develop and implement strategies that provide the improvement of nursing care based on scientific evidence.
